Drawer Knife Holder

Choosing a drawer knife holder is not hard, there are many styles and sizes available both online and in your local store. Drawer knife holders are made in different materials too. A plastic kitchen holder is probably the cheapest you can buy. This does not mean that they are not good; plastic is the cheapest material available for this purpose.

You can find the holder you need in many different colors and styles, plastic is very versatile and you will surely find what you need.  If you have made up your mind for a plastic drawer knife holder, try to buy one made of polycarbonate plastic. This is the toughest plastic used for kitchen and home utensils and it will be your best option because they are almost indestructible.

Another option for a drawer knife holder is stainless steel. It is a little heavy and will become heavier if you take it out of the drawer with all the knives inside but it will surely last for a very long time. They are available with two designs, the first is solid stainless steel all around and the second is a kind of mesh that allows you to look at your knives from any angle. The meshed drawer knife holder would be better when you need to wash it. It will probably be lighter than the solid one too.

A third option in materials is wood. Wood may be the best choice all together. It is light and good looking and has a great advantage over the other two options. Because wood is easy to work with and shape, wooden knife holders have slots to put the blades into. Only the knife handles are visible so there is no danger from accidental cuts or nicks when trying to retrieve a knife from the drawer.

The other two options leave the knives exposed; they have no individual protection for the blades. The price on the wooden holders is in between the plastic and stainless steel and which is another advantage. Keeping your knives separated within the drawer is a good idea because they can lose their edge and sharpness when they bump into each other as you pick the one you need. 

When buying a drawer knife holder make sure that it is the right size for your kitchen drawer. Not all kitchen drawers are the same size. Drawer sizes in one country vary with regards to others. European kitchen furniture is smaller than American made. Most drawers made in Latin America by woodworkers have different sizes too, so make sure you have the right size when you buy it.
 
Whichever style and material you chose make sure that all your knife ware fits into it comfortably and does not overflow your drawer knife holder. Knife holders have different height walls so take this into account too. The holder should not fit snuggly into the drawer either, enough room, so your hands fit into the drawer to pick it up, should be left on the sides.
